Record Auction Price for Midnight Red Barbie Doll
A record price of almost $18,000 was paid this week at auction for a Barbie Doll. Barbie in Midnight Red, which was first released in 1965, was part of the world’s largest collection of about 4,000 owned by Dutch
fashion designer, Ietje Raebel. Ms. Raebel had originally purchased a Barbie Doll for her daughter Marina, who did not like
or want the doll, which led to her collecting them. According to Christie’s of London, this is the most money ever paid for
a Barbie Doll.
Ruth Handler, who co-founded Mattel Toys, invented the Barbie Doll in 1959 and was named after her daughter Barbara. Since then,
Barbie Millicent Roberts, otherwise known as Barbie, has had over 95 different careers and has been produced as 45 different races. The Barbie Doll also has had more than 43 pets and a boyfriend named Ken. Ms. Raebel’s entire collection brought in more than
$211,000.
